Remains of an ancient synagogue were discovered in Saranda, a coastal city in southern Albania, a testament to centuries of Jewish heritage.
Albania was the only Nazi-occupied country whose Jewish population actually grew during the war. Guided by Besa, Albanian families risked their lives to shelter Jewish refugees from across Europe.
The Hechal Shlomo Synagogue was inaugurated in Tirana, and Rabbi Yoel Kaplan was appointed as the first Chief Rabbi of Albania, marking a new chapter in the revival of Jewish life.
